  1. Gemma says:

Jane describes her behaviour as being affected like “a giant with wine”. I assume that this is a reference to the Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey. But the thing with the Cyclops is this–he knows nothing about how to drink wine properly. He drinks it unmixed and without observing proper etiquette, to the point where he is sick. Is Charlotte suggesting that the situation has affected Jane’s judgement and that she is unwisely saying more than she ought? In this speech she gives St John enough information to be able to trace her and find out some (if not all) of her history.
