Hmmmm. Well, this brings up for me the question– Can deep admiration exist between a man and a woman, without being a physical relationship? It more than the modern question of a guy and a girl being friends and not ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’. This is the more mature friendship. Yes, the love each other, and because of their respect for each other they can ask each other things like Newland’s request that Ellen not go back to her husband and Ellen’s request that Newland not break her cousin’s heart. Is it ever possible that knowing and admiring a person’s qualities and faults can keep a person of the opposite sex close to your heart. I believe it is possible, but for the involvement of society. And society must be involved, mustn’t they?
