I’ve been casting my mind back to my childhood to remember what my brothers would have wanted on the table at their 12th birthday parties (besides Star Wars action figures), and the first thing that leaps to mind is food. Is this the son that likes Shakespeare? You know what was really popular around that time, if memory serves? Food centerpieces. Pinterest, as you can imagine, abounds with ideas from simple to elaborate ways to stick pieces of fruit onto styrofoam cones, but if you want a Bar Mitzvah that your guests will be talking about for years to come, I heartily recommend that you go the “Alas, poor Yorick” route and make the meat head–http://foodgawker.com/post/2012/10/22/199836/

(I don’t know what flavor of Jew your family is, but you may want to substitute some other meat for the ham. Turkey would make a less fleshy skull, and lox might break the bank a bit, but it would look like muscle, and how gory and awesome would that be? If you were a twelve-year-old boy?)

Of course, you can never go wrong with a dinosaur– http://media-cache-ec3.pinimg.com/originals/8a/95/12/8a9512d1321200539ec8e4bfb4ac8e1b.jpg
