Also, the 1997 version with Ciaran Hinds is not bad. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119404/. Not nearly as satisfying as the 2006 version with Toby Stephens, even though I’m a huge fan of Ciaran HInds. (Nobody makes a better Captain Wentworth!). I think it’s because Ruth Wilson is a much better Jane than Samantha Morton. And the chemistry between Ruth and Toby is much more palpable.
The BEST movie version of Jane Eyre–http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780362/. Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. And I’ve seen all the others you mentioned on the podcast plus some. Toby Stephens is gloriously gruff and remote at first. Ruth Wilson is quiet and subdued. As they spend time together Rochester slowly becomes more open and charming and Jane becomes more open and confident. But this is a process the director, Susanna White, makes sure we get to see. And yes, the scene where they meet is, I think, very close to the book. Although if I remember correctly Rochester blames Jane for spooking his horse. She does insist on helping him.
Now if you’ll excuse me I think I’ll go watch it again.
Howwwww are you watching?! Netflix? Nothing I’ve found will stream this version.

So, I actually purchased the DVD because it’s so good (I’m not aware that it streams anywhere) after having seen it on PBS. I’ve watched it maybe 20 times (a little bit of escapism during law school finals). Probably my opinion of it will be revised as I continue to listen, but it really hooked me. He’s a fantastic Rochester and she’s a fantastic Jane. The portrayal of Sinjin is pretty good, too. I almost didn’t listen to the book on the podcast because I didn’t want to ruin this version – but it hasn’t and the podcast has been wonderful. If you can borrow this version from your library or if there are any video stores left in your town, it’s worth it.
So enjoying Jane Eyre – truly one of my very favorites since childhood! Just wondering though, did I miss chapter 11? By what I’ve listened to, we seem to have skipped right over Chapter 11 and Jane’s arrival and impressions of Thornfield Hall. Thanks and have a great New Year!
Heather — hope you are feeling better! I used the holiday break to catch up on Jane Eyre — can’t wait for the next installment. Also enjoyed A Christmas Carol last night while knitting.
I also wanted to let folks know that one of the books you’ve been talking about “The Eyre Affair” by Jasper Fforde is on the daily Kindle Sale today! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OCXHC2/?tag=craf08-20. I will tweet this also.
