A comment on the brightness and upkeep on the A–I imagine that, if the natural explanation is heeded and Hester is keeping her A intact, it may not be a reflection of her own piety and shame, but that it was part of her sentence. Would her persecutors be content with her wearing a shabby-looking sign of her ignominy? Or would they think it a sign of her punishment being less felt, and thus in need of renewal? Though clearly Hester is not trying to escape her punishment, she may be in fear of its increase.

    Just a thought.
