    I’m enjoying the 12 days of CraftLit. I had a different interpretation of the coal in the parents stockings and thought I’d share.

    I didn’t interpret the coal in the parents stocking to be a joke present. I assumed it was wrapped so it was known it was a real present and not because they had been bad. Adults seem to appreciate more practical presents (my brother asked for and received a crib for his son due next year) and the parents might be relieved not to have to buy coal as soon as they might otherwise.

      That was my first thought…except that Howells was pretty wealthy. The thought of his wife unwrapping coal wrapped in tissue paper (from the kids) made me giggle. Not saying it wasn’t also appreciated, just that it seemed silly on another level, too. 😉
