Robert Louis Stevenson is one of the most surprising writers I’ve ever rediscovered post-childhood. You can kind of tell he had tangentially caught the zeitgeist of psychological churn that was happening at the time, since he created some of the most complex characters ever. (Not just here, but Long John Silver in Treasure Island is a big surprise, too!)
